Laufey Lin Jönsdóttir, known as Laufey (pronounced /lay-vay/), was born on April 23, 1999, in Reykjavik, Iceland. She has a twin sister named Junia Lin Jönsdóttir, who is a violinist. Laufey was born to a Chinese mother, Lin Yaoji, and an Icelandic father. She grew up in both Iceland and Washington, DC.


Laufey graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2021. Her musical talent was inherited from her mother, a classical violinist. Additionally, her grandfather was a violin teacher at an arts institute in China. Laufey participated in two national talent competitions in Iceland in 2015.


In 2020, Laufey made her debut with the single "Street by Street," which quickly gained widespread attention on streaming platforms and social media. The song, with its poetic lyrics and intimate arrangement, demonstrated her ability to convey deep emotions. Her debut album, "Everything I Know About Love" (2022), solidified her position as one of the most promising contemporary jazz artists.



Laufey is known for her soft and warm voice, blending elements of nostalgic jazz with a modern approach that appeals to a younger generation. In her lyrics, she explores themes of love, loss, and everyday life with simple yet captivating honesty. She even held two concerts in 2023 and 2024 at the BNI Java Jazz Festival in Kemayoran, Jakarta, where the enthusiastic response from Indonesian fans led to an additional concert. Laufey has a loyal fanbase worldwide, known as "Lauvers."

Another strength of Laufey lies in her ability to create jazz songs that incorporate elements of traditional Icelandic music and contemporary pop.
